Router Basics (Thursday)

The Router is the second most important power tool in any shop. It is also the most versatile. Learn the basic techniques of using this tool, some of the shop made jigs that make it do more, and what to look for when purchasing a router. No materials needed.

Instructor Rick Gallion has been a professional woodworker for thirty years and has taught many students the craft of woodworking. His new shop is designed as a teaching facility. All classes will be held at the Clary Lake Woodworking School at 777 Gardiner Road (Hwy 126), Jefferson. Class size is limited. Safety glasses provided for each class.

Sharpening Woodworking Tools (Monday)

The first thing to learn about woodworking is sharpening the tools you will be using. In this course you will learn to sharpen bench chisels, plane irons, card scrapers, cabinet scrapers and marking knives. We will be using a grinder, a burnisher and water stones to put a razor edge on your tools. Bring in your grandad’s old plane or chisel or a new tool. They will all need sharpening.

Small Tray Class

Calendar Jan 4, 2018 at 5:30 pm, runs for 2 weeks

Adults must accompany all children under the age of 16. Come hand build in this special two night class. The first night students will build their own small veggie tray. The second night students will glaze their tray! Each family will get a slab of clay to make their tray with. These trays will take a bit more time so it is recommended that at least two people work on each one. A materials fee of $15 per tray is payable to the instructor the first night of class.

Bridgette Kinney has been a potter for 14 years and is the owner and operator of Dragon’s Breath Pottery in Warren.

 

Table Saw Basics (Tuesday)

The table saw is the most important tool in the shop. It does more than just cut wood to exact dimensions; it also does joinery, molding, and with a few simple jigs that you can make, it will also do specialty cuts. Learn how to get the most from your saw, how to use it safely, and what to look for when purchasing a saw. The course will be taught using the amazing new SAWSTOP, the saw with the built-in brake system that prevents injury from a spinning blade. No materials needed.

Thanksgiving Turkey Center Piece

Calendar Nov 1, 2017 at 6 pm, runs for 1 week

The project for this one night class will be a big Thanksgiving Tom Turkey centerpiece to accent your Thanksgiving table. Students will be working with under-glazes and glazes for this project. Big Tom will need to go back into the kiln for his final touch, but will be back in time for Thanksgiving. The materials fee is $35, which covers the piece and the use of all tools and glazes to complete the project.

Cynthia Dean is the owner of the ceramic shop “Paint It Shoreself,” located in Rockland. She first fell in love with ceramics in grade school and bought her first kiln and molds at 22. Cynthia is certified through Gare, Mayco and Duncan Ceramic Companies and has been teaching ceramics for over 20 years.
