A Field Course in Old Barns

$74

with Les Fossel

Calendar Mar 26, 2019 at 6:30 pm

This is a course for people who have an old barn (that perhaps needs repairs), want an old barn, or just love old barns! The emphasis will be on practical ways to maintain your old barn at an affordable cost.  The first session is in the classroom. After that, meetings will be held in the old barns of class members. There will be as many sessions as are required to visit the barns of class members who want their barns visited (by no more than 12 people).  This course is co-sponsored by the Morris Farm Trust in Wiscasset.

The last class will be a potluck supper at the instructor’s house, where class members can see the instructor’s cabinetmaking shop and barns, and delve into his reference library on early buildings (one of the very best in Maine).

NOTE: Following the first class, the day and time of future classes will be determined by class members in a way to accommodate as many individual schedules as possible.

Les Fossel is one of Maine’s foremost experts on early buildings. His award-winning business has specialized in preserving our early buildings for 42 years. He has lectured throughout Maine and the Northeast, including as a faculty member for the University of Southern Maine. More information on his business enterprises is available at: www.oldhouserestoration.com.

A Shortcourse for Woodland Owners

$10

with Morten Moesswilde

Calendar Mar 30, 2019 at 8:30 am, runs for 1 week

This presentation is a condensed version of more indepth, multi-session woodland owner classes (next offered in fall 2019). We’ll discuss key topics of interest to landowners of 5-500 acres – including how forests grow, how to get the most out of your woodland, and resources for landowners. A checklist on planning for a successful timber harvest will round out the program. After a short break at 12 (brownbag lunch if you wish), we’ll go for an optional hour+/ walk to discuss forest conditions and view some of HVNC’s forest thinning projects.

(NOTE: depending on weather/road conditions, there may be a 5-10 minute walk from parking on Egypt Road to the building)

Morten Moesswilde is District Forester for the midcoast region for Maine Forest Service. His work includes presentations, tours and workshops, for all ages, as well as individual assistance to forest landowners, community and municipal groups. He has been with Maine Forest Service since 1999.

Adventures in Word & Image Afternoon

$124

with Jodi Paloni

Calendar Apr 2, 2019 at 3:30 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Note: The end date for this class listed in our Winter/Spring brochure was incorrect. The correct end date is 4/30.

Some say “April is the cruelest month…” but maybe not so cruel if you have something fun and engaging to look forward to. In this four-week series, we’ll delve into the work of fearless writing and image-making in the spirit of “creating with the brakes off.” Immersing in writing prompts, paint and paper projects, and simple assemblages will help us explore ways in which the written word may be embedded into art and how art can inspire us to write.

Jodi Paloni is the author of the linked story collection, They Could Live With Themselves, a two-time finalist for the Maine Literary Awards and IPPY Silver Medalist. She has an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts.
